Why Do Baby Boomers Love Adventure?

Deb Gaillard is a Baby Boomer. Like many of her generational peers, Gaillard has taken an extreme liking to adventure travel. In 2013, she told the Wall Street Journal about a few of the activities she’s participated in in her recent travels over the past few years, like building an igloo while traveling in Romania and canoeing in the crocodile-ridden Budhi Gandaki River in Nepal.

“I hope to take these trips as long as I can,” she said.

She’s not alone. According to recent studies, it’s evident that more and more Baby Boomers are embarking on risky expeditions and participating in extreme sports. They’ve have taken up hiking, diving, surfing, mountain climbing, skiing, seafaring, skydiving and more – but why? What’s the motivation?

The answer is simple: Boomers love to travel because they can. Adventure travel is an economic luxury that has not been afforded to a generation before now.

Four years ago, writer/photographer Jonathan Look turned 50. He decided to dispose of the majority of his material possessions and hit the road. For the past four years, Look has been actively writing about his adventures on his blog, Life Part 2. While Look sometimes writes about his exotic experiences (like eating a live cobra heart), often times, he’s writing about how much money a person will need to retire in foreign, faraway places – what essentials are required for retiring overseas? What does it cost to live in Costa Rica for a month? How about Madrid?

Look is hardly the only Baby Boomer travel blogger out there. There’s the travel agency power couple the Roaming Boomers, Never Stop Traveling and My Itchy Travel Feet, which bills itself as “The Baby Boomer’s Guide to Travel.”

Baby Boomers aren’t just flocking to the internet to write about their travels – they’re using the internet to meet other Boomers to travel with. All over the country, hundreds of Baby Boom Travel Clubs actively seek new members to travel with. Now that’s how you start your second life with a boom.
