Perfect town for the history buff. St. Augustine is driven by tourism which provides for many volunteering opportunities. Also, note, that because it is located on the northeast coast, there are cooler Florida temperatures.

Venice, Florida

Another city out of Florida, located on the Gulf of Mexico is named after Venice, Italy because of its beautiful canals and rivers running through the city. The traffic is calm and the prices are low, exactly what you are looking for. There are plenty of parks, beaches, golf courses, tennis courts located in nearby Sarasota.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

If you are looking for either downtown living or planned communities, Myrtle Beach has both. Grand Stand is a beautiful stretch of beach with shopping and restaurants as well as theaters. There cost of living is low and there is excellent medical care available.

Beaufort, South Carolina

Another great city in South Carolina. An old river town best known for, the obvious, fishing as well as golfing. Beaufort has very mild winters and hot summers. There are many retirees living in Beaufort as well as many new families.

Boise, Idaho

This is a city for the active senior looking to be outdoors. There are many walking and biking trails as well as mountains and rivers. And there are so many cultural opportunities!

Palm Springs, California

Located in Coachella Valley, the landscape is breathtaking and full of rich culture. If you decide to move to Palm Springs, you must visit Joshua Tree Park, but beware Palm Springs has very hot summers. If you decide to move to Palm Springs, plan to spend your summers in the air condition or swimming in a pool.

Austin, Texas

This is the town of volunteering opportunities as well as the town of art. There are open air art markets, galleries, museums and performing art studios. You could volunteer at an art gallery! Austin is known as the ‘live music capital of the world’. This town is great for the young, energetic senior!

Abilene, Texas

Abilene is an old railroad shipping town with year round warmth. There are many recreational and social opportunities for seniors. And the best part is the cost of living is over 10% below the national average.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Located in the mountains, this town is picturesque with clean air and a booming economy. The only “problem” are the cold winters and hot/dry summers. If you do not like the extreme weather changes, this is not the city for you, but if you don’t mind it, then definitely give it a try.
