Stay Involved in Your Moving Plans
It can be difficult to feel involved in a senior move when you are unable to help with any of the heavy lifting, when you are too tired to do all of the work or maybe you literally cannot remember to call the movers. We want to help you feel involved in your senior move. With these tips you will feel like it is your move and not someone else’s move.
Start by doing some of your own research. You do not need to do all of the research for your move, but you should take a look at the research that has been done for you. If your caregiver did most of the research, read it, and add your own notes. Tell your caregiver what you like and what you dislike. Staying involved in the research keeps you informed.
Create your own moving schedule. You may not be able to physically move your items; however, typing or writing your own moving schedule is helpful. You are most knowledgeable about what days will work for you – what days you are more awake and what days you do not feel up to staying involved. Make these days known to your caregiver when planning your move.
Be there on moving day. Don’t take a back seat to the movers and your caregivers – get involved. Be there, make sure your furniture is wrapped properly, that your couch is protected and that all of your special recipe books are in a secure plastic bin. These are your items, so keep communication open between you and the movers and your caregiver.
The most important part of staying involved is communication. Communicate with all parties involved – your family members, your movers and your caregiver. Make your thoughts and expectations clear.
