Perfect Gift Ideas for Seniors in Assisted Living

As we start the second week of December, most people, if not all, have begun their holiday shopping. Many of us were able to take advantage of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, but did you remember your loved ones in the senior living facility??

When there is someone you love living in a senior living facility, they must not be forgotten, especially around the holidays. It is very important to purchase the perfect gift to show them how much you care. We have compiled a great list of the perfect gifts for mom and dad.

Below is a list of holiday gifts for your elderly parents in no specific order.

• Clock with large, bright numbers
• Night lights
• Bird feeder
• Soft gloves for the indoors
• Grip socks
• Photos
• Gift cards
• Large button universal remote
• Puzzles

Now let’s take a look at each item specifically to determine why it will work for mom and dad.

Clock. Most people already have a clock, a phone with the time on it and most likely a watch but do mom and dad have a large letter, bright clock. The key word is large and bright. As we all know, as we get older our eye sight starts to suffer. This type of clock would be much appreciated by seniors.

Night Lights. Mom and dad should already have a night light, but it is even more important to have one in every room. You can also get them a holiday night light or color changing night light if you want to be festive and/or creative.

Bird Feeder. This may sound a little strange but putting a bird feeder outside of your parent’s room will give them something to talk about as well as prevent them from feeling lonely.

Soft gloves. As you age, your circulation starts to slow down making your hands feel cold even inside. Get mom and dad a pair of comfortable indoor gloves to help fight the cold.

Grip Socks. Again, mom and dad should already have these, but they can always benefit from another pair. As theirs get worn or if they are in the wash, they will have another pair to put on. This gift will provide warmth as well as safety.

Photos. This may sound vague, but photos can be anything. You could fill your parent’s wall with framed photos of you, your kids and the grand-kids. You could also purchase them photo gifts such as a photo mug, photo ornament, photo blanket and even a sweatshirt – whatever you think they would use the most. These can easily be found on websites such as Snapfish and Shutterfly. And don’t forget a photo calendar – awesome gift!

Gift cards. Think about mom and dad and where they like to go or what they need. Does mom need a pedicure or is there a diner that dad loves to eat at? Maybe they are really into music and an iTunes gift card would be something that would like. These are sometimes thought of as impersonal but in reality they are just what your parents’ need.

Large button universal remote. This goes along with the large number clock. Your parents definitely have a remote control but they may be struggling to figure out what it says.  This will solve their problem.

Puzzles. These are great way to keep the mind fresh and to occupy a lot of your time. This could be a photo puzzle – something to think about!

The most important thing to remember when buying for mom and dad this holiday season is to be thoughtful – what is it they might like. It doesn’t have to be expensive, is can also, just be your time. Spending time with mom and dad is important too, especially over the holidays.
