Most Important Holiday Senior Moving Tips
The holidays are a time for being around loved ones and the warm feeling of being at home. Moving into a senior living facility can throw a major damper on those warm feelings and on your overall holiday spirit, which is why we want to help. With these ideas and tips for moving over the holidays, your normal traditions and holiday expectations will be met.
The most important thing to remember is to start planning early. This means as soon as you find out (whether you find out over the summer, fall or a few weeks before your holiday move) start planning. Plan for the holidays as well as for your senior move.
Ask for help. Find out if your children, cousins, friends, etc. can help plan both your senior move as well as your holidays.
Your son or daughter would be a great asset for your move. Ask them to come over as soon as possible to start packing, so you can spend time focusing on the holidays. This will help keep your holiday traditions in place. You can go out shopping (or online) for gifts early. Remember if the company you purchase the gift from asks if you want it wrapped, always say yes. This will make life a whole lot easier!
HOLIDAY TIP – Send a holiday card with your change of address on it. This is a great way to complete two tasks at one time!
If you plan on moving after the holidays, this is the perfect opportunity to have all of your everyday items pack and ready to go – the only thing not packed should be your decorations. This will keep your home feeling warm with the holiday spirit and you will know you are ready to go as soon as the holiday is over.
On the other hand if you need to move before the holidays, wait to unpack until after. Keep your holiday decorations readily available and have a holiday decorating party as soon as you move in. This will help to unpack your holiday boxes and still keep you in the spirit. It will also help you feel less alone with the familiar faces helping.
Be sure to use all of your original holiday decorations – you already have a new apartment, new decorations could be too overwhelming. Your old items will help make your new place feel more like home.
It is also important (whether you move before or after the holidays) to keep your holiday traditions in place. If you like to go for a drive and look at the lights, do it! Take your family, friends or whomever you usually go with and take the night off from packing. Maybe you enjoy making cookies, but no longer have a kitchen, in that case make a new tradition out of an old one and bake cookies at your child’s home with your grandchildren.
It is very important to keep in mind that whenever you move and wherever you end up, the many holiday traditions that you so fondly remember will be with you, and that you’ll never be too far away from that!
