How to Ship Your Child’s Prized Awards
Have you built a shrine to your son’s football memories from when he used to play college football? Or maybe you have a spot in your basement, or even in your living room showcasing awards your daughter acquired during her many years on the swim team. Whether you have a son or a daughter, no matter what the sport or hobby, your child’s accomplishments mean the world to you. So, when it’s time to rightsize, you’ll likely need to ship those priceless awards back to your now, adult child.
Shipping trophies, plaques and metals is easy; the hardest part is taking them off of your wall and allowing them return to their original owner! You son or daughter will be excited to be reunited with all of their accomplishments, as long as you ship them in one piece.
The best way to start the shipping process is by gathering your materials. The first item you will need is a box. The box should be strong and durable. Purchasing a new box is highly recommended, but if you are on a budget and need to purchase a used box, make sure it is durable.
Next, you will need to protect your awards with packing materials such as bubble wrap, packing peanuts, newspaper, cardboard or even old towels. Plaques metals and trophies should be wrapped thoroughly. While there are numerous packing options, what you choose to wrap your awards with will depend both on your budget and availability of materials. Can you get to a store and purchase bubble wrap or do you need to work with what you have? – that is the question.
Whether you choose to wrap your items with ‘official’ packing materials or would rather use newspaper and towels that are lying around the house, make sure to wrap the items well. Wrapping them well means use layers of cushioning such as bubble wrap and secure all wrapping with packing tape. The packing tape will keep the protective wrap in place during transit. Cardboard is another option for wrapping awards. Cardboard is strong and durable so that the awards are properly protected during shipment. You can easily cut up an old box for scraps and wrap it around your award as well.
Plastic wrap is highly recommended. Plastic wrap can be purchased at any home improvement store or pack and ship store and is good for securing protective wrapping around items. You can also use a plastic zip lock for smaller metals and plagues. This will prevent any water damage.
Fill any empty spaces with filler. After packing all awards into a durable box, fill all empty spaces with packing peanuts to prevent them from shifting during shipment. If you do not have packing peanuts any type of cloth, towel, and newspaper will also suffice. Without filling the empty spaces, the items may get damaged while in transit.
Tip – do not fill your box heavier than 30 pounds; use extra tape to secure the box.
Label your box, FRAGILE. Label the box on all sides so that no matter where it is placed, the shipping company and the movers will know to be extra careful with handling the box.
