Shipping Grandpa’s sharp edged tools can be more complicated than preparing blunt ended tools for shipment. It is important to wrap the tools with materials that will prevent the tools from damaging other items during shipment.  Not only do you need to wrap sharp tools to prevent damage, also to prevent injury to those transporting the tools.

Below are three materials most commonly used to wrap sharp edged tools.

Materials you will need for wrapping sharp edged tools.

• Leather Cover
• Heavy Corrugated Wrap Sleeve
• Plywood

When you think about wrapping items for shipping, bubble wrap and newspaper may come to mind however, these packing materials are not enough for a hatchet, hacksaw and handsaw.

Leather Cover. It is suggested to start wrapping the tools with a leather cover. If you are unable to find a leather cover that fits snug, you also have the option of purchasing a piece of leather and molding it to fit around the tool. While the leather may not be completely snug, using twine to secure the leather around the tool is also an option.

Corrugated Cardboard Wrap. A heavy duty corrugated wrap sleeve is an alternative way to wrap sharp edged tools. If you rather not use a leather cover, corrugated cardboard will provide durability as well as protection. Corrugated cardboard will also relieve any additional pressure on a bladed tool by providing added thickness and shock absorbency.

Plywood. Using a piece of plywood is recommended to reinforce the primary wrapping; whether it be a leather cover or a corrugated wrap. The plywood is meant to provide additional stability to the tool and to prevent the blade from bending during shipment.

Once the tools are wrapped, it is extremely important to make sure all tools are secure in a heavy duty box or a custom built crate and labeled “Sharp Tools” on the exterior. Fill any empty spaces within the box with packing peanuts to avoid the tools shifting during shipment.
