‘Go Green’ Senior Moving Tips
Moving and shipping needs vary for every customer. But, the one thing that remains the same for everyone who is moving – saving money. A great way to save money on specialty moving and shipping is to ‘go green.’ This is a great way to help with your budget as well as reduce waste in the environment.
Start by using recycled boxes. This should be a top priority when moving ‘green’. You don’t need to buy boxes! Purchasing boxes from your local moving company or UPS/FedEx isn’t cheap; it is actually more expensive than you think.
Talk to family and friends who have recently moved and see if they have extra unused boxes that they are looking to dispose of. You can also visit local department stores and grocery stores and ask if they have any boxes they could give you. Many stores have packing peanuts too, so don’t forget to ask about them as well!
You can also rent or purchase bins or crates as well. Many times Walmart, Target, Lowes and Home Depot sell storage bins for cheap – as low as $5. These work especially well for home items you plan to store; they are packed and ready for storage.
There are also places to rent moving boxes, storage bins and even crates. Try Rent a Green Box. You pay a certain price, they deliver the bins, you use them for your move and they pick them up when you are done – easy and environmentally safe!
Next walk around your house and look for materials. Packing materials are lying around your home and you don’t even know it. For example, use throw blankets to protect fragile items such as, pictures and drink ware. You can also use hand towels to wrap glasses in. Using what you have is beneficial in many ways – protecting and moving fragile items while saving money!
Organize. Unpacking after a senior move can be tedious, but it doesn’t have to be. Make unpacking less stressful by organizing your items BEFORE the big move! In doing so, you will avoid wasting your precious storage space, and you’re saving the time and energy it takes to load and unload unwanted items on and off the truck.
‘Going green’ helps save the environment but also is beneficial to your budget. It is very important to make a senior checklist to prepare you and your specialty move coordinator — you can right size by figuring out what you own, and then decide what moving materials you have and need to get. When you prepare, it’s not difficult to make your move ‘green’—and the environment will say thanks!
