Helping Parents Move from a Distance

Living a good distance from your parents has both its advantages and disadvantages; as many can attest. One of the disadvantages of living far from mom and dad is trying to help them with their senior move.

Moving elderly parents out of their home into an assisted living facility, or even ‘rightsizing’ to a smaller home doesn’t have to be difficult. One of the most important aspects to helping your parents is communication. Staying in touch with mom and dad during the elderly moving process is the key to a successful move.

The first part is to find a reputable moving company to handle the move. Most likely mom and dad are unable to assist with the actual packing and moving of boxes, this is where a Specialty Move Coordinator is useful in order to help organize the move. Finding someone who is understanding and compassionate to your parents is imperative, especially if you are unable to be by their side through the move. Call and speak with potential moving companies until you feel comfortable selecting and suggesting the mover for your parents.

Another essential step your parents will need to take prior to rightsizing is to decide what items in their current home they are willing to donate, recycle or discard. It is a good idea to work directly with the specialty move coordinator via phone to allow your parents to talk through the memories of items that they need to discard. The Specialty Move Coordinator will be able to help with this process of communication between you and your parents during the organizational process.

*Utilizing family and friends that are local to your parents is also a positive way to motivate your parents to focus on the task and share memories of valued items.

Sometimes family members or friends aren’t always available to help. If you would like to have an additional support person there for your parents in addition to the specialty move coordinator, researching available caregivers in your parents’ area is a great idea. It is easy to become consumed by the task of getting your parents what they need during the moving process; that is why it is imperative that you take time for yourself and your family as well. Take the pressure off of yourself and let Moves for Seniors take care of your parents for you. Take comfort in knowing that mom and dad are in good hands with our specialty move coordinators.
